Dan The Fish Man

A reluctant farewell to Holsworthy

Sadly, I’m calling it a day at Holsworthy market. After serving customers on my fish stall for over 20 years I am cutting Wednesday at Holsworthy from my weekly schedule.

It’s with deep regret that as a result of the gradual decline in business over the last few years in Holsworthy and the current temporary closure of the market I have decided to stop selling there. My other six market venues are all booming. However, I will continue promoting and selling local fish across the region, with more events planned in 2017.

When I started selling Clovelly herrings directly from my boat to the public 24 years ago, Holsworthy was a happy bustling town, but sadly this is no longer the case. Where have the people gone? I have been keenly actively involved with the Town Council, trying to keep the market square alive. But I now believe, for me, it is no longer viable.

I’d like to offer a massive thank you to all my customers over the years at Holsworthy. I hope to see you all at the neighbouring markets in Hatherleigh and Bideford. Please check out the Home Page of this website for more details.

I will still be selling and promoting fish six days a week. The nature of my fish business is evolving, and expanding into more cooking events and food festivals across the county. I'm looking forward to seeing my loyal customers at these events.

Happy Fishmas to all!

So, Christmas is here again. Our local fishing boats have now landed and are safely tied up. And that’s it until they sail again in the new year.

I’m slowly winding down after a busy season of markets and events, and really looking forward to a few days relaxing with my family.

Important diary date: My first day back on my fish barrow is Tuesday 10th January at Hatherleigh Market. See you there.

I hope you’ve got all your fishy Xmas treats from me. If you have missed out, my best advice is to choose Devon’s best beef as part of your Christmas Day feast. Our county can be truly proud of all the excellent local foods it produces. Long may it continue!

Have a great Christmas!

What an honour! Three years running!

I'm delighted to have won the award for the Devon Life "Best seafood supplier of the year" for the third year running! It's a huge surprise.

I am so proud to win again for North Devon, and my sincere thanks go to everyone who voted for me. Devon Life magazine put on a wonderful glitzy black tie evening, and it was wonderful to be there to accept the award.

Thank you again. The fish fight goes on!
