Dan The Fish Man

Putting a spring in my step

Well, receiving friendly comments like the one below are what get me up in the morning and put a spring in my step. They make me work even harder in my mission to spread the word about the West Country's excellence in fine fish and seafoods. I'm always delighted to go that extra mile for happy visitors sharing our Devon delights.

"Dan, we just wanted to say that the lobsters you sold us last week were absolutely delicious, succulent and sweet and they made for a memorable wedding anniversary meal.

We had the scallops on our return to Somerset and they were excellent too, cooked to perfection following your instructions. We’ve also enjoyed your pate very much and have recommended you to the owners of the cottage in which we were staying as well as bigging you up in the visitors’ book and leaving your flyer in the kitchen - so expect even more custom.

Thanks again and hope to see you again when we next visit North Devon."

I won't say who it's from, but thank you! See you all soon.

Join me at the Plymouth Seafood Festival!

Plymouth Seafood Festival, Saturday 16 September and Sunday 17 September, The Barbican, Plymouth

There may be hurricanes in America and strong, chill winds blowing across the West Country, but I promise you a warm welcome if you turn up at my barrow at the Plymouth Seafood Festival this weekend. This hugely popular festival is returning to the the city for the 6th year.

I'll be performing some fancy fish magic on the Barbican, cooking up lobsters galore and carrying out cooking demonstrations with the BBC.

There's something special for the children too. I'll be holding Kids Fish Cookery Workshops, helped by my assistant Catherine. We'll be cooking up a whole menu of delicious seafood treats.

It promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable event, so make sure you come along to join in the fun. I hope to see you there!

French seafood delights

French fish stall

I'm still away on holiday in France. I've been meeting and making friends with some of the very best French fishmongers, sharing recipes and enjoying oysters together.

My photo shows a market stall full to bursting with the mouthwatering seafoods of all kinds. It's typical of the French people's devotion and commitment to fine cuisine.

I'm looking forward to sharing my travel tales with you when I get back in mid-August. See you then!

It's time for my holiday!

I'll be away travelling in France for my annual break from my regular markets.

France is always a wonderful source of inspiration for me, and I'm looking forward to searching out new recipes to share with my customers.

So I won't be around from 1st August to the 14th August.

My early morning starts do take a toll, and I'm sure I'll come back refreshed and ready to press on with my mission to promote sustainable fishing and excellence in seafood cuisine.

Cooking up a treat with Martin Hesp

I enjoyed a great inpromptu day out with my old friend the Devon journalist Martin Hesp. He's just recovered from open heart surgery, and on his first day back at work I joined him for a cookery session on Appledore Fish Quay.

Martin brought along his special high-tec barbecue, and we cooked up delicious grey mullet and some mouth-watering lobsters – the Black Gold of the Sea.

It was great to see Martin back on his feet again.
