Dan The Fish Man

A great year so far for Devon fish

Our summer so far has been wonderful, with some glorious periods of warm sunny weather. I'm especially grateful to our North Devon fishermen for the quality of the catches they've been landing. They've been been top class, so let's hope it continues.

I'm really enjoying being at Appledore and supplying customers old and new with fish and seafood of such fine quality. It's proving to be a vital part of my mission to put fish on the tables of as many Devon families as possible. Eating fish is healthy!

I'm sorry I will no longer be at Hatherleigh on Tuesdays. It's been a wonderful experience being there over the years and chatting to all my customers. Thank you for your support!

From now on you'll find me at Tavistock market on Tuesdays, which is becoming hugely successful. I'm working hard there and meeting more and more West Devon lovers of prime quality fish and seafood.

My weekly travels are now taking me from coast to coast in the county. There's a lot of driving, which is hard graft, and I'll be at it until my regular holiday in France later this year.

I look forward to seeing you all again soon!

My apologies, Crediton

Dear Crediton customers

I won't be at my regular stall in the town this weekend. Things are getting busier and busier, and I'm booked to be at Flavour Fest in Plymouth. I sincerely apologise to all my loyal and regular customers in the town.

But … you can find me and my fish road show at the Crediton Food & Drink Festival on the weekend of the 9th and 10th June. I'll be cooking up some delicious seafood treats and holding demonstrations.

I'm finding that Devon food festivals are the perfect way for me to get my message over to thousands of people who would otherwise not be aware of how delicious West Country fish and seafood can be.

So, Crediton, I hope you'll forgive me! I look forward to seeing you at the town's food and drink festival on the Saturday (not Sunday). It's bound to be a wonderful event, packed with stalls offering food and drink of all kinds, plus entertainments for all the family. See you there!

Do please keep checking the website news section for details of venues. There have been changes and there will probably be more as the year goes on. To make it easier I'm aiming at putting together a proper calendar for next year so that you (and I) know where I'm going to be and when.

The crusade goes on!

Tavistock apology and Flavour Fest

I'm afraid I won't be at my usual stall at Tavistock market this weekend. I'll be at the Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor. Don't worry, I'm not competing!! I'll be doing my annual duty cooking up food for the teams of teenagers who are tackling this mammoth challenge. I take my hat off to them. So, my apologies to my regular Tavistock customers and all Devon fish lovers.

But … you can find me at Flavour Fest, the fantastic three-day event held in Plymouth, from Friday 1 June to Sunday 3 June. Returning for its 15th year, Flavour Fest is the South West’s largest free food and drink festival. With nearly 100 stalls and an exciting programme of cooking, you're bound to find something new to taste or experience. And make sure you track me down – I'll be performing some role that the organisers and I are planning at present. I hope to see you there!

Great news about my wet fish Wednesdays on Appledore Quay. They're going down a storm, and I'm delighted. Why not catch up with me there? A visit to this picturesque, old-style fishing port is always a joy. You'll find me outside Johns store from 9am to 1pm.

Spreading the word at Tavistock

I'm really enjoying building relationships with new customers at Tavistock market. Here's a wonderful letter I've just received from one of my new 'regulars':

Hi Dan

A quick note to express my thanks for the fish we bought yesterday in Tavy.

My youngest daughter is not a fussy eater but tends to eat like a sparrow. The John Dory looked quite fearsome once cooked, but I followed your instructions and it tasted wonderful.

Suffice to say, both my girls ate my share as well. BUT... most surprising of all, my youngest ate the eyeballs! Once finished, she proceeded to take apart the skeleton too. All good.

I am certain that your chat at the stall each Saturday is helping my girls to understand fish, and certainly helping me cook more and fear less.

Thank you

Best wishes

Edward

That's very pleasing! I'm delighted that my mission to encourage people, young and old, to enjoy the harvests of our West Country seas is working. Let's all keep it up!
