Dan The Fish Man

Tavistock apology and Flavour Fest

I'm afraid I won't be at my usual stall at Tavistock market this weekend. I'll be at the Ten Tors Expedition on Dartmoor. Don't worry, I'm not competing!! I'll be doing my annual duty cooking up food for the teams of teenagers who are tackling this mammoth challenge. I take my hat off to them. So, my apologies to my regular Tavistock customers and all Devon fish lovers.

But … you can find me at Flavour Fest, the fantastic three-day event held in Plymouth, from Friday 1 June to Sunday 3 June. Returning for its 15th year, Flavour Fest is the South West’s largest free food and drink festival. With nearly 100 stalls and an exciting programme of cooking, you're bound to find something new to taste or experience. And make sure you track me down – I'll be performing some role that the organisers and I are planning at present. I hope to see you there!

Great news about my wet fish Wednesdays on Appledore Quay. They're going down a storm, and I'm delighted. Why not catch up with me there? A visit to this picturesque, old-style fishing port is always a joy. You'll find me outside Johns store from 9am to 1pm.

Spreading the word at Tavistock

I'm really enjoying building relationships with new customers at Tavistock market. Here's a wonderful letter I've just received from one of my new 'regulars':

Hi Dan

A quick note to express my thanks for the fish we bought yesterday in Tavy.

My youngest daughter is not a fussy eater but tends to eat like a sparrow. The John Dory looked quite fearsome once cooked, but I followed your instructions and it tasted wonderful.

Suffice to say, both my girls ate my share as well. BUT... most surprising of all, my youngest ate the eyeballs! Once finished, she proceeded to take apart the skeleton too. All good.

I am certain that your chat at the stall each Saturday is helping my girls to understand fish, and certainly helping me cook more and fear less.

Thank you

Best wishes

That's very pleasing! I'm delighted that my mission to encourage people, young and old, to enjoy the harvests of our West Country seas is working. Let's all keep it up!

Have you checked out my Instagram site? It's gradually being filled with pictures of me out and about with my barrow.

I'm adding new photos regularly, so join the 200 and more customers and friends who are already visiting the site. It's the perfect way to see what I'm getting up to at my markets and events.

See me at Appledore Quay every Wednesday

I will now be at Appledore Quay, outside Johns store, every Wednesday from 9am to 1pm, April to September, starting tomorrow 4 April. It will the perfect chance for you to stock up on the very best in wet fish and shellfish.

Appledore is at the heart of our local fishing. I always love my time there, chatting  with the fishermen who ply the seas around Devon, bringing home the fine fish and seafood we all enjoy so much. I'm proud to be working with them, and helping to make our industry the very best.

I look forward to greeting customers and friends old and new!

Easter News – South Molton, Tavistock and Lobsters

Well, it's a huge relief winter's out of the way – we hope! I have to confess I didn't enjoy the early morning plodding journeys through snow and slush to reach my weekly markets. But today was sunny, and I'm hoping spring is now well on the way. And it's Easter this weekend and the clocks have gone forward – which always puts a spring in my step.

You won't see me on my barrow in North Street, Bideford this Good Friday. But if you're hoping to buy fresh fish and seafood for the Easter holiday you can catch me on Maundy Thursday (that's this Thursday if you've forgotten your Christian holy days!) at South Molton market.

I'm off to Tavistock for an extra market on Easter Saturday. Tavistock is turning out to be a great success for me, and I'm building a following of loyal, enthusiastic customers who expect the very best in fish cuisine. They're a terrific crowd, and I love talking fish with them at my stall. Last week at Tavistock I enjoyed my best day of the year. So, thank you, Tavistock!

First of the season lobsters

Our Devon inshore fishermen have been out tending their creels over the past few months and they're starting to land the first lobsters of the year – always an exciting time for anyone who enjoys fine seafood. I'll be pleased to take your orders at Tavistock, and to pass on some mouthwatering ways of cooking lobster - it's all part of my mission to 'bring the coast to the country'.

A sincere thank you to all my regular customers and friends across the West Country. I look forward to seeing you all soon.
